About
Ethan Canan is a woodworker, designer, and furniture maker based in Northern Vermont. He was born and raised in Washington D.C. where as a kid, he found a connection to creating visual art through his drawings, stick sculptures in nature, and in street art. The city, with its own unique voice, culture and identity, has influenced him on how he views the world and it plays a role in his work today.
He moved to Vermont for college and felt disconnected towards the degree path he was taking. He missed a personal connection to his work. Self-reflection helped him reconnect to the visual arts, with an emphasis on three-dimensional form. With passion and a focus, he returned to school and focused on traditional woodworking and joinery. He received his BFA in Fine Woodworking and Furniture Design from Northern Vermont University in conjunction with The Vermont Woodworking School.
His work merges contemporary and outside the box thinking to design pieces that make us re-examine the way we live with and interact with our everyday surroundings. He is dedicated to the craft of woodworking and strives to create pieces of fine furniture that challenges his creative mind, and will last generations to come.
